On the Non-canonical Valency Filling

چکیده
Valency slot filling is a semantic glue, which brings together the meanings of words. As regards the position of an argument in the dependency structure with respect to its predicate, there exist three types of valency filling: active (canonical), passive, and discontinuous. Of these, the first type is studied much better than the other two. As a rule, canonical actants are unambiguously marked in the syntactic structure, and each actant corresponds to a unique syntactic position. Linguistic information on which syntactic function an actant might have (subject, direct or indirect object), what its morphological form should be and which prepositions or conjunctions it requires, can be given in the lexicon in the form of government patterns, subcategorization frames, or similar data structures. We concentrate on non-canonical cases of valency filling in Russian, which are characteristic of nonverbal parts of speech, such as adverbs, adjectives, and particles, in the first place. They are more difficult to handle than canonical ones, because the position of the actant in the tree is governed by more complicated rules. A valency may be filled by expressions occupying different syntactic positions, and a syntactic position may accept expressions filling different valencies of the same word. We show how these phenomena can be processed in a semantic analyzer.

On the Predicate-Argument Structure: Internal and Absorbing Scope
Valency filling is considered a major mechanism for constructing the semantic structure of the sentence from semantic structures of words. This approach requires a broader view of valency and actant, covering all kinds of actant-bearing words and all types of valency filling. We introduce the concept of scope as a generalization of actant: it is any fragment of a Syntactic (SyntScope) or Semant...
متن کاملAN OBSERVER-BASED INTELLIGENT DECENTRALIZED VARIABLE STRUCTURE CONTROLLER FOR NONLINEAR NON-CANONICAL NON-AFFINE LARGE SCALE SYSTEMS
In this paper, an observer based fuzzy adaptive controller (FAC) is designed fora class of large scale systems with non-canonical non-affine nonlinear subsystems. It isassumed that functions of the subsystems and the interactions among subsystems areunknown. By constructing a new class of state observer for each follower, the proposedconsensus control method solves the problem of unmeasured sta...
متن کاملEvaluation of Water Deficient Stress Tolerance in some Wheat Cultivars and Their Hybrids using Canonical Discriminant Analysis and Genotype by Trait Biplot
Canonical discriminant analysis (CDA) in combination with cluster analysis and genotype by trait (GT) biplot analysis methods were used to assess 9 wheat cultivars having different degrees of tolerance along with 36 F1 hybrids derived from partial diallel crosses, using stress tolerance indices, in two levels (well watered and cessation of irrigation at pollination stage). Cluster analysis clas...
متن کاملSymmetric Graphs of Valency
In this thesis we classify primitive amalgams of degree (5,2) and thereby obtain a description of symmetric graphs of valency 5. There are 22 such amalgams, and together with this list, we find the presentations for the universal completions of such amalgams and an example of a faithful finite completion in each case. Our methods include group theory, the amalgam method and some modular represe...
متن کاملThe Canonical Wnt Signaling (Wnt/β-Catenin Pathway): A Potential Target for Cancer Prevention and Therapy
Precise regulation of signal transduction pathways is crucial for normal animal development and for maintaining cellular and tissue homeostasis in adults. The Wnt/Frizzled-mediated signaling includes canonical and non-canonical signal transduction pathways. Upregulation or downregulation of the canonical Wnt-signaling (or the Wnt/β-Catenin signal transduction) leads to a variety of human diseas...
